SAVING TUBBATAHA: Factsheet and Principled Statement on the Tubbataha Grounding Incident

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park rests in the middle of Sulu Sea, 150 km away from the shores of Puerto Princesa City. Part of the Coral Triangle, the world’s center of marine biodiversity, Tubbataha is comprised of two coral atolls that are home to a wide array of fish and coral species. For the excellent state of reefs and the abundance of marine life, the Philippine government designated it as a marine protected area and a national park and has banned fishing, shipping and navigation in the site since 1998.

FACTSHEET: Philex Tailings Pond 3 Breach

News of the breach of the Philex Mining Tailings Pond 3 (TP3) in Padcal, Benguet broke out in August 2012, after nearby communities reported contamination of rivers, as indicated by the smell of rotten fish and medicines of the river and the whitish (bleached) color of riverbanks. The leak of voluminous amount of tailings was caused by the collapse of TP3, which was operating beyond its estimated lifespan of 18-20 years. An EIM on the mining disaster was conducted on October 26-28, 2012 to confirm the reported impacts and take preliminary data on the extent of damage.
