Solid Waste Management in Barangay Tunkong Mangga

The Center for Environmental Concerns - Philippines (CEC) has begun a program to help improve Solid Waste Management in Barangay Tunkgong Mangga, City of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. CEC has been working closely with barangay officials to implement the program. The program will try to tackle the management of solid waste by characterizing and quantifying the waste streams generated in the community and then exploring opportunities for waste minimization.

Response to disaster: Relief and education towards disaster-preparedness

In response to the disaster wrought by Typhoon Gener and the habagat to the country last August, Center for Environmental Concerns-Philippines, together with Development and Peace-Canada and local partner organizations, held a series of relief missions in various communities, from Rizal to flood-prone areas in Metro Manila.

Tampakan Mining Project: Prelude to a Disaster?

The Center for Environmental Concerns spearheaded an environmental investigative mission (EIM) on the Xtstrata-SMI mining operations in Davao del Sur and Sultan Kudarat to get a first hand assessment of the initial and potential impacts of the Tampakan Copper-Gold Mining Project of foreign transnational corporation Xstrata and Philippine-based affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI). The EIM was held from August 26 to 28, 2010 and capped by a press conference held in Digos City on August 28, 2010.

While barely recovering from the havoc wreaked by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng during the last quarter of 2009, the Cagayan Valley region has been hit by an equally devastating menace through the El Nino season which struck in February 2010. Local governments declared the province in a state of calamity while the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) categorized it as the region most affected by the typhoons with the highest worth of estimated damages to agricultural products amounting to P6.2 billion.

Scoping trip to Malampaya Sound, the PH Fish Bowl

In March this year, 2 staff members alongside a volunteer visiting from America flew to Palawan to visit and assess the the Malampaya Sound Land and Seascape Protected Area and the local community who manages the protection to see what work is being done, and where CEC can assist, ensuring a community-first, rights based approach to environmental sustainability.
